First Hearings of 3 Academics Held

Second hearings of four academics and first hearings of three academics have been held. Academics Alper, Eksen and Çağlayan have made their statements of defense.

Hearings of academics, who have been standing trial on charge of “propagandizing for a terrorist organization” for having signed the declaration entitled “We will not be a party to this crime” prepared by Academics for Peace, continued in İstanbul 36th, 34th, and 14th Heavy Penal Courts.

Scholars at Risk (SAR) has announced Turkey’s Academics for Peace (Barış İçin Akademisyenler) as recipients of the 2018 Courage to Think Defender Award, for their extraordinary efforts in building academic solidarity and in promoting the principles of academic freedom, freedom of inquiry, and the peaceful exchange of ideas. The award, which will be presented at the Scholars at Risk Network 2018 Global Congress, will be accepted on behalf of the group by Muzaffer Kaya, of Technische Universität Berlin, and Tebessüm Yılmaz, of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Academics Benlisoy, Gülsüm Acar Sentenced to 15 Months in Prison, Sentences Suspended

Dr. Stefo Benlisoy from İstanbul Technical University and Dr. Lecturer Yasemin Gülsüm Acar from Özyeğin University have been sentenced to 15 months in prison. Their sentences have been suspended.

Two more academics, who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime" prepared by the Academics for Peace, have been sentenced to 1 year 3 months in prison. Their sentences have been suspended.

35th Heavy Penal Court Combines Cases of Academics

35th Heavy Penal Court combined 10 cases that were heard today. The next hearing will be held on October 18.

Second hearings of 10 academics, who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration entitled "We will not be a party to this crime" prepared by the Academics for Peace, were held at 35th Heavy Penal Court in İstanbul Courthouse today (April 12).

3 More Academics Sentenced to 15 Months in Prison

Academics Kovankaya, Keleşoğlu and Garip have been sentenced to 15 months in prison in the hearings held at 32nd Heavy Penal Court, the sentences have been suspended.

Hearings of academics, who have been standing trial on charge of “propagandizing for a terrorist organization” for having signed the declaration entitled “We will not be a party to this crime” prepared by Academics for Peace, continued in İstanbul Courthouse 32nd Heavy Penal Court.

9 Academics Stand Their First Trial in 3 Courts

While one of three courts have approved the demand that files be requested from 13th Heavy Penal Court, the other two rejected. Demands for immediate acquittal have been rejected.

Nine more academics, who have been charged with "propagandizing for a terrorist organization" for having signed the declaration "We will not be a party to this crime" prepared by the Academics for Peace, had their first hearings today (March 29) at 37th, 32nd and 24th Heavy Penal Courts.
